Burnet shows Jarrell who are the better Bulldogs during final scrimmage

The Burnet High School football team flashed much more than the seven touchdowns during its final scrimmage against Jarrell Aug. 19.

Burnet scored in a variety of ways: short and long touchdown passes and short and long touchdown runs. Meanwhile, the Burnet defense yielded only two touchdowns, all in the live quarters, during the two-and-a-half hour affair.

Head coach Bryan Wood noted his players displayed the chemistry and rapport coaches have highlighted throughout the last several months. Each Bulldog did his job and trusted his teammates to do theirs. That’s why they were able to score seven times and kept Jarrell to two scores throughout the scrimmage.

During the controlled portion of the scrimage, Burnet senior quarterback Tanner O’Hair engineered a drive that resulted in a three-yard touchdown pass to junior receiver Will Johnson that led him perfectly toward the right side of the end zone.

When the reserves took over, junior quarterback Grant Jones drove Burnet down the field and called his own number for a five-yard score. A couple of series later, Jones scored again from 39 yards and added his third touchdown from the receiver position when O’Hair hit him on a corner pass in the end zone from 25-yards out.

During the live portion of the scrimmage, junior running back Dash Denton went up the gut of the Jarrell defense — right up the middle — to pay dirt from 30 yards.

Jarrell answered immediately with a long touchdown pass.

O’Hair and Jones broke the tie with a 70-yard scoring pass. O’Hair made Jarrell pay for its interception caught by senior defensive back Braden Ellett-Clark when the quarterback found junior receiver Garner Krause for an almost 70-yard scoring pass for a 21-7 advantage.

Jarrell added a touchdown to end the scoring.

Wood credited Jarrell for having answers for the Bulldogs offense at the start of the event.

“I thought we got hit in the mouth pretty good early,” he said. “The beautiful thing I saw was the resiliency of our kids. There was no gripping at each other, there were no heads down. We were just making plays.”

He noted his Bulldogs didn’t lose their energy, which was a testament to their conditioning.

While Jones performed at a high level, Wood said the athlete can be so much better.

“I don’t think he’s got it figured out yet,” he said. “His route running is getting better.”

Burnet wasn’t shy in distributing the ball to its massive number of weapons, Wood said. He anticipated the Bulldogs played in more than 70 offensive snaps that relied on many to get positive yards. He also commended the offensive line for its run blocking that opened holes for Denton and senior running back Jose Rodriguez and pass protection that allowed receivers such as junior Garner Krause to shine.

The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the 2022 season opener against La Vernia at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at Bulldog Field, 1400 Bulldog Stadium Drive.
